3: Getting started

Instructions on how to get an account on our machines and some advice on how to set up your user area.

Getting an Account

To get an account on the RAL EISCAT machines, contact either Steve Crothers (steve.crothers@stfc.ac.uk) or Matthew Wild (matthew.wild@stfc.ac.uk). You will need to supply the following information:

Your name
An email address at your home institution
A contact telephone number
Your preferred login id (it might not always be possible to honour this)
Your preferred unix shell type (csh, ksh, bash etc)

A user area will then be created, together with a basic login script that puts the core software areas into your search path. You can then modify your login scripts and account profiles to customise your account as you wish.

The next sections of this document describe how to use the software that is available on the RAL EISCAT computers.
