IMPRES Proposal

This is the web site for the IMPRES FP7 proposal for Space Weather Co-ordination in Europe.

The project is applying for the web address www.impres-fp7.eu, and we will move there when the registration of the new URL is confirmed.

The proposal was submitted on November 23 2011, in response to the EC FP7 call FP7-INFRASTRUCTURES-2012-1

Abstract

The IMPRES project aims at the development of a well-coordinated and user friendly infrastructure for the monitoring and prediction of space weather, integrating all key infrastructures in Europe for the observation and study of the ionosphere and magnetosphere, including the EISCAT system, solar ground-based observatories, ionospheric sounders, GNSS receivers, ground magnetometers and data from satellites operating in geospace. IMPRES will provide improved access to the participating facilities, either locally or remotely. A set of activities are designed to optimize the development, use and sustainable operation of these facilities, including the systematic involvement of users from the academia and the industry to the evaluation and assessment of IMPRES scientific and technical developments; a focused training programme; the development of higher performance methodologies to improve the operation of the facilities and the design of low-cost instrumentation to support their maintenance. Most importantly, the IMPRES operators and model developers will interact closely with the industry and with public organizations for civil protection and safety, to design innovative products for predicting the serious impact of space weather on critical operating systems. These novel products are aimed to meet the needs of these important users for early warning and mitigation planning. To aware the public about space weather and its effects, IMPRES will develop the European Space Weather Outreach and Media Centre that will provide a picture of current space weather conditions, media releases, outreach articles and educational services. The ultimate goal of the IMPRES consortium would be to develop a carefully studied plan for the sustainability of the IMPRES infrastructure after the end of the EU funding period. The users’ satisfaction report and the commitment of the partners together with the international developments in this field will be the main drivers for this pursuit.
